Synopsis

Everyone is excited about Zachary starting school. He is a bit nervous. Will it be everything that he’s heard about?

Reflections

New experiences can be very stressful for children. Author, Danielle Butler, explores some of the common experiences when one starts school such as open house. This is a friendly conversation starter for parents and little ones as Danielle also explains some key expectations for behavior when going to school. Introducing the idea of school to children prior to them starting can be very useful as it helps them to slowly adjust to what school is and why it’s important.

The language used in the book was age appropriate. My two-year-old daughter followed the large print and identified words such as: to, the, and, he be, and, a, like. Although she is already in school she was able to relate to the main character, Zachary. We talked about the various activities she completes at school highlighting her favorites.

When my daughter was preparing for school we completed a tour the week before, talked about school (what it is, what will she so there, etc.), and she went part-time (three days) for the first week. By the end of the first month of school she’d adapted well. By the end of month two, she was asking about school on the weekends and crying to go there on weekends, ha ha.

There’s a pleasant surprise at the end of the book that encourages readers to tap in to their inner artist.
